An Interview with WeiChing of WalaPalette
WeiChing is illustrator, surface pattern designer and creator of digital resources based in Malaysia. She is focused on hand painted watercolor clip arts, graphics, illustrations and digital papers.
I think my greatest accomplishments were when I received those kind words from my customers and how they recreate their very unique designs by using my pattern or graphics and expanding the diversity of my designs. I am proud of them.
What have been some of the challenges you’ve encountered in design?
Marketing and branding my designs.
What role does surface pattern design play in your life?
Design has played an important role in my life as it decorated and painted my world in a colorful and positive way.
What is something you wish you knew about surface pattern design before you started in it?
I think there are too many things I wish I knew before I started. But that's okay, keep learning new things every day is the key to staying ahead though.
Where do you find inspiration?
I like to observe nature and the things around me to get inspiration. I also love to explore Pinterest, Behance etc as there are so many talented designers out there with their amazing artwork which is really inspiring.
Do you have a strategy or system you use to approach designing your patterns?
Not really, just be passionate and keep exploring.
Do you use mood boards or other sources of inspiration for your designs?
Yeah, sometimes.
Which program or programs do you use to create your designs?
I draw with watercolor or pencil sketch and digitalized the artwork by using Photoshop or Illustrator.
How long did it take you to build up your portfolio?
Almost 2 years+.
How did it feel to see your design on a product or product mockup for the first time?
I was so impressed and excited for sure, they look so real and beautiful on the mock up and it is really amazing.
Do you have a favorite design or collection of designs?
There are too many designs that I love, can't really decide which is my favorite .
How has using product mockups benefitted your design process or sales?
Definitely, it allows people to have a better idea of what the designs will look like on real products and prints.
Is there anything else you want us to know about you and what you do?
I feel happy to paint what I see and I am starting to feel this way about a lot of things in my life after I started my digital stores. And I hope people are able to find a little bit of happiness from my artwork too.
